In 2021, my composting journey began when we moved to a house with a garden. I still remember how composting was such an alien concept to me. Like many others, I initially thought composting would be smelly, dirty, and complicated.

Looking back on my composting journey, I can't help but smile at how anxious I was during that first year. I obsessed over the perfect green-to-brown ratio (don't worry, we'll explore this concept soon). I fretted over lots of items - would they rot down okay? Were they suitable? Then as time moved on, I became more relaxed about composting and started to enjoy the process.

Over the years, I’ve experimented with various composters, from purpose-built commercial designs, to compact worm boxes with coir substrate, to structures made at home by dismantling pallets. Through all this exploration, I've discovered something important: while there are some basic principles to follow, composting doesn't have to be complicated. Whether you're a complete beginner or someone who found composting too overwhelming, this post is for you.

Garden Empire: The Black Gold Tycoon

Welcome to the world of Garden Empire! In this game, you'll raise a magical creature called Compost that creates the most valuable material in the garden world - Black Gold. This precious material is your key to becoming a successful gardener: use it to grow food or flowers and expand your garden empire.

Your journey begins with a single Compost pet and a simple garden plot. Feed your pet well, and it will reward you with Black Gold. The more efficiently you manage your resources to feed your Compost, the faster your garden empire will grow!

Basic Game Rules

1. Starting Your Empire: Your success depends on keeping your Compost pet happy and productive. Like any valuable asset, it needs proper care:
   • Fresh Air: To breathe and stay active
   • Water: To stay hydrated (but not drowning!)
   • Food: To maintain its energy and warmth
2. Resource Management: There are mainly two types of food you can use to feed your Compost: the Greens and the Browns.
   • Green materials: These are your "power foods" - garden grass, fruit peels, and vegetable scraps. They boost energy production and keep your pet hydrated. Think of them as premium fuel!
   • Brown materials: Your "structure foods" - autumn leaves, paper, cardboard, tree branches. They create cosy spaces for your pet to move and air to breathe. Think of them as building blocks!

3. Monitor Your Pet’s Health: watch out for these three vital signs.
   • Moisture: Aim for the "wrung-out sponge" feeling - your pet should be cosy, not swimming or parched! When it is too wet, add more Browns; when dry, add Greens or sprinkle water.
   • Heat: Warmth means your pet is busy creating Black Gold. Steam rising from your pile is a sign of peak production! If Compost doesn't generate enough heat for itself, you can easily boost it with the greens.
   • Smell: A healthy Compost should smell earthy, like forest soil. If it starts to smell bad, that's your pet telling you something's wrong. When this happens, most of the time, it means there is too much green stuff in the mixture and too little brown. Mixing in some browns in its diet can normally fix the problem rapidly.
4. Resource Cycles: Your garden empire operates on clever resource management:
   • Garden Harvests: When you harvest crops, most go to your food storage, but don't waste those kitchen scraps! They're premium "green" fuel for your pet.
   • Landscape Maintenance: Mowing grass and pruning tree leaves creates abundant green materials. Warning: Too many greens without browns can upset your pet's tummy and create bad smells!
